Reset a VPS root password

Guides2 min read4 steps

Where: Client area › My services › Linux VPS › server page, “System & access” section, “Password” tile.

If you have lost your VPS root password, you can generate a new one from the server page. The server restarts to apply it.

Generate a new password

  1. Open the tile

On the server page, in the “System & access” section, click the “Password” tile.

  2. Get the confirmation code

Enter your “Current password” (your client area password), then click “Send me the code by email”.

  3. Confirm

Enter the “Confirmation code (received by email)” and click “Reset”.

  4. Save the password

The “New password” is displayed. Click “Copy”, store it in your password manager, then click “I have noted the password”.

The common pitfall

The server restarts to apply the password: your services are interrupted for one to two minutes. And the password is displayed only once — it cannot be viewed again afterwards.

If it doesn't work

  • The code does not arrive: check your spam folder, then request it again.
  • You can no longer reach the server over SSH at all: the “Console” tile gives screen access that depends on neither the network nor the firewall.

Manage your servers

Root access is managed from the page of each of your VPS.
