Activate managed Cloudflare DNS on a domain

Guides2 min read4 steps

Where: Client area › My services › Domains › domain page, “Managed DNS zone” block.

Managed DNS hosts your domain's zone with us, on Cloudflare's infrastructure: you then manage your records in a few clicks, without going through another provider. Activate it before adding any record.

Activate managed DNS

  1. Open the domain page

In “My services”, click “Domains” and then the domain in question. Scroll down to the “Managed DNS zone” block.

  2. Click “Activate managed DNS”

The “Activate managed DNS” button creates the zone, automatically copies the records already in place into it, then delegates your domain's nameservers.

  3. Check the zone status

The message “Managed DNS active — the zone is being served.” confirms that everything is in place. You can then use “Add a record”.

  4. If delegation stays pending

The message “Waiting for nameserver delegation.” means the delegation could not be done automatically. Copy the servers shown under “Point your domain's nameservers to:” and enter them in “Nameservers (DNS)”, or at your current registrar if the domain is not managed by us.

The common pitfall

An empty zone is never delegated: if your domain already serves a website or email, check that its records appear in the zone before changing anything on the nameservers.

If it doesn't work

  • The block does not appear: the domain may be under review at the registry — DNS management stays hidden while the review is open.
  • An error message appears under the zone status: note it down and open a ticket from “Support”.
  • Nameserver propagation can take up to 24 hours depending on the operators.

Find the managed DNS zone on the page of each of your domains.
