Deployed on your own VPS, Mattermost keeps all your exchanges on your infrastructure — an asset for organizations subject to confidentiality or compliance requirements. The stack (Go server + PostgreSQL) runs in Docker containers and installs in a single step. Desktop and mobile apps, inbound/outbound webhooks and bots let you automate and integrate Mattermost with your tools.

Create the VPS
VPS with 2 GB RAM minimum, Ubuntu 22.04. The "Mattermost" template installs the server and PostgreSQL in containers.
First access
Once your domain points to the VPS and is attached to the app, Mattermost answers on https://your-domain, with no port number. Without a domain no public access is opened: start an SSH tunnel with ssh -L 8065:127.0.0.1:8065 root@your-vps-ip, then open http://localhost:8065 (8065 is the catalogue port; use the one shown on your app's page in the client area). The first account created becomes the system administrator.
Configure the site URL
Set the public URL (Site URL) and enable HTTPS via a TLS certificate before inviting your team.
Create teams and channels
Structure your spaces by team then by topic channels, and set the default channels.
Invite and integrate
Invite your collaborators and connect your tools (CI, monitoring, tickets) via webhooks and slash commands.
