Can I import my Google Maps history?

Yes. Export your history via Google Takeout (Records.json) and import it in Dawarich under Settings → Import. Processing runs in the background.

Does Dawarich require a domain name?

No. Dawarich works without a domain via SSH tunnel. A domain is recommended if you want real-time smartphone sync through OwnTracks or Overland.

Which mobile app should I use?

OwnTracks (iOS and Android) and Overland (iOS) are supported. Set your Dawarich server URL in the mobile app settings to enable automatic sync.

How do I back up my data?

Dawarich stores data in PostgreSQL and Docker named volumes. Back up the database (pg_dump) and volumes (dawarich_storage) to preserve your journeys and imports.

Create the VPS

Choose a plan with at least 2 GB RAM and 20 GB SSD. The Dawarich template deploys Ruby on Rails, PostgreSQL with PostGIS and Redis via Docker Compose — no domain required.

Access Dawarich

Open your VPS address in a browser. Create your admin account on first login — Dawarich shows a registration form on first visit.

Import your history

Download your Google Takeout archive (Records.json) and import it via Settings → Import. The import runs as a background job — large archives take a few minutes.

Install OwnTracks or Overland on your smartphone and point it to your Dawarich server URL for automatic real-time location sync.
