How does it differ from Matomo?

Umami aims for simplicity: a handful of screens, immediate reading, very low resource use. Matomo is a full platform — segments, funnels, e-commerce tracking, heatmaps — that needs more RAM and more time to learn. Pick Umami to know what works; Matomo to analyse why.

How many sites can one instance track?

There is no application limit: add as many sites as you want under Settings → Websites. The real limit is the event volume your VPS absorbs; beyond a few million page views a month, plan more RAM and disk for PostgreSQL.

Can I import my Google Analytics history?

No. Umami offers no GA4 import, and the data models do not map onto each other. Common practice is to run both in parallel for a season, then switch GA4 off and keep its export as an archive.

What happens when a visitor uses an ad blocker?

Because the script is served from your own domain, it escapes most block lists, which target ad-network domains. Measurement is therefore usually more complete than with Google Analytics — a 10 to 30 % gap is commonly observed at switchover.

Create the VPS

A 512 MB ServOrbit Cloud VPS is enough for moderate traffic. The "Umami" template installs the application and its PostgreSQL database as Docker containers.

Sign in for the first time

Open your domain on port 3000 and log in with the default admin account (admin / umami). Change that password immediately — the instance is public.

Register your site

Under Settings → Websites, add the domain you want to measure. Umami generates an ID and the script to paste before your closing </head> tag.

Check collection

Visit a page of your site from another browser: the visit should show up on the real-time dashboard within a minute.

Frequently asked questions

Umami sets no cookies and stores no identifier that would let it recognise a visitor across visits. On that basis, consent is not required for audience measurement. The legal assessment remains yours: if you add other trackers to the page, your banner is still needed for those.

Yes. Everything lives in the container's PostgreSQL database: your ServOrbit VPS automatic backup covers the whole instance, and you can run a pg_dump at any time for an off-server copy.
