Can I import my Google Analytics history?

Yes, unlike lighter tools. Matomo ships an importer that replays GA history through Google's API. Since the data models differ, expect discrepancies on some metrics, sessions in particular.

How does this differ from Matomo Cloud?

The software is the same. Here it runs on your VPS: you do not pay per visit volume, you keep the raw data, and you handle updates and backups yourself. Some premium plugins remain paid in both cases.

How much traffic can one instance handle?

A 1 GB VPS comfortably absorbs a few hundred thousand page views a month. The pressure point is not collection but report computation: beyond that, add RAM and schedule report processing instead of computing on display.

Are heatmaps and session recording included?

Create the VPS

Plan for 1 GB RAM minimum and 10 GB of disk; past a million page views a month, double both. The "Matomo" template installs PHP and MariaDB as Docker containers.

Open your domain on port 8080: the Matomo wizard checks prerequisites, creates the super-user account and registers your first site.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on your configuration. With IP anonymisation, tracking cookies disabled and a short retention period, Matomo can be used without consent in several European countries — France's CNIL has published an exempt configuration along these lines. In the default configuration, with cookies, consent is still required.
