.sn registry rules

What the .sn registry asks of anyone registering a name, rule by rule, with the source of each statement and the date we read it.

What the .sn registry requires

The registry: NIC Sénégal
The .sn is delegated to Cheikh Anta Diop University (CURI — NIC Sénégal) in Dakar; AFNIC is its technical operator. ServOrbit registers your .sn through a partner registrar.

An address in Senegal, or a representative
The naming charter (article 10) asks that an individual be of age and have an address in Senegal, that the administrative contact be based in Senegal, and that a registrant domiciled abroad appoint a representative based in Senegal or, failing that, provide a letter of accreditation to the provider.

What ServOrbit does
We do not provide a representative in Senegal, and none of our partner registrars offers one for .sn. The search reminds you of this rule before you add the name to the cart; the order is not refused, but the registry may ask for the letter of accreditation afterwards — you would then write it yourself.

What the registry does in practice
A Moroccan company, as registrant and administrative contact, registered and renewed a .sn without a representative. No case has been measured, either way, for an individual domiciled outside Senegal.

A .sn WHOIS that reads the registry
The registry publishes an RDAP service, which our .sn WHOIS queries to show a name's public record. The IANA RDAP bootstrap points to another address, which does not answer in RDAP: we read the one that works.

Check whether your .sn is available

What this page does not tell you

  • Whether a given name is free, reserved or sold at a premium price: the domain search tells you, at the moment you search.
  • The registry can change its rules. Each rule is dated from the day we read it; where anything differs, the registry's own text prevails.
