.fr registry rules

What the .fr registry asks of anyone registering a name, rule by rule, with the source of each statement and the date we read it.

What the .fr registry requires

The registry: AFNIC
The .fr is run by AFNIC, which sets its rules. ServOrbit registers your .fr through a partner registrar.
Source: IANA root zone database, .fr record (iana.org/domains/root/db/fr.html).
Residence or registered office in the EU, the EEA or Switzerland
A .fr registrant — individual or company — must have their residence or registered office in the European Union, the EEA (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) or Switzerland. Outside this area and without the trustee service, our checkout blocks the .fr before it reaches the registry.
Source: registry conditions read every night from our partner registrar, as of 27 October 2026.
Elsewhere: the trustee service
The "Holder domiciliation (trustee)" option makes the .fr orderable by a registrant based outside the EU, the EEA and Switzerland: the domain is registered with an eligible European address provided by our partner registrar. It is offered in the search, before the cart, and is paid per domain and per year; its price is shown when you add it. It is ordered when registering a .fr, not when transferring one.

A .fr WHOIS that reads the registry
AFNIC publishes an RDAP service, which our .fr WHOIS queries to show a name's public record — dates, status, name servers — without the registrant's contact details.

Check whether your .fr is available

What this page does not tell you

  • Whether a given name is free, reserved or sold at a premium price: the domain search tells you, at the moment you search.
  • The registry can change its rules. Each rule is dated from the day we read it; where anything differs, the registry's own text prevails.
